]]>The post Abu Dhabi residents cheated out of thousands by tour company appeared first on The Wealth Land.
]]>Abu Dhabi: More than 200 residents have been cheated out of thousands by a tour company in Abu Dhabi.
Make My Tour (MMT) approached residents in malls and asked them to fill out forms for a chance to win a prize.
Once families went to claim that prize they were offered five star travel packages at cheap rates.
Residents who signed up parted with between Dh1,000 to Dh30,000 and were then unable to avail of any of the benefits and weren’t offered discounts, leaving them shuttling between courts and government offices.
The tour company has since closed its offices and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development has also pasted complaint notices on its door dated September 5 and September 23. The DED notice reads: “Based on complaints received against you [MMT], it’s requested to contact consumer protection department within two days from the date of issuing this notification.”
One of those affected by the scam, Balu Jacob, said, “I was cheated out of Dh30,000 and there are more than 200 people who gave been money and were cheated by Make My Tour.”
He believed that they might start another company in the UAE with same people.
“Somehow they have to be stopped so that other people should not be cheated.”
Many of those affected, mostly Indian residents have now complained to the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the DED, said Jacob.
Singaiah Mattakoyya, who paid Dh19,000 for a package, said, “Initially we were called and informed that we had won a lucky draw and were requested to come to their office. We were then offered 70 days of five star hotel stays all over the world.”
The contract explained that visas and sightseeing was included.
“We paid the entire amount Dh19,000,” said Mattakoyya.
Following many visits and calls to their office the company never booked stays however. Instead Mattakoyya was offered a cheque for Dh7,000 as refund, which bounced.
Mattakoyya filed a case with the police and civil court, and a first hearing will be held on November 13.
Another victim, Gorve Kumar, paid Dh10,000.
“They called to say I had won a lucky draw and once I visited their office they introduced me to their tour packages,” he said.
“They made it attractive so I took one package for 10 weeks holiday for Dh18,000 plus Dh1,000 registration.
“I paid them Dh1,000 in cash for registration and half of the contract amount at Dh9,000.
“When I asked them to book holidays for me though they asked for extra money, but have had nothing in return from them yet,” he added.
Zubair Mohammad, who was also scammed, said, “I got a call to say I had won a gold coin in a lucky draw. They then offered us tour packages and I took one for 14 days at Dh4,200. After a month, I tried to chat with them through WhatsApp and called, but found the number was disconnected.
“I called their office number, but got the same response. I even went to their office in Najda street but found it was already closed and there were DED letters stuck to the door,” he added.
Mohammad Abdul Jabbar, another victim, said, “As a rough calculation, from those victims of this scam who gathered in the park recently, which was around 16 people, we found most had paid between Dh4,000 to Dh30,000 on various packages and the amount was reaching Dh250,000.
Gulf News tried to contact the company but got no reply via phone or email.
No comment has been forthcoming from the DED as yet either.

]]>The post Philippine embassy appoints lawyer for Filipina who died in Abu Dhabi appeared first on The Wealth Land.
]]>Dubai: The Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila have appointed a lawyer to handle the case of a Filipina who died in Abu Dhabi allegedly after falling off a building.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the DFA expressed condolences to the family of Mary Jean Balag-ey Alberto, who died in Abu Dhabi on October 2.
Alberto allegedly fell to her death from the 13th floor of a building in the capital where she worked.
Alberto’s three children, however, are not buying the idea that their mother jumped to her death. They suspect foul play in the incident, according to their statement posted by the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), an independent group founded in Bontoc, Mountain province, where Alberto hails from.
“The department shall respond appropriately once the results of the forensic investigation are released,” Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Sarah Lou Y. Arriola said in the statement, adding the mission “now retains a lawyer to pursue immediate legal steps in connection with the death of Ms. Alberto”.
A police comment was not immediately available.
According to DFA, its Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (OUMWA) and the Philippine Embassy are already in touch with the family of Alberto and assured them that the department is closely monitoring the case.
“The embassy is giving full assistance to the family of late Mary Jean Balag-ey Alberto. Together with friends of the family, embassy representatives accompanied the daughter of the deceased in coordinating with UAE authorities and embassy lawyer to discuss immediate legal steps in coordination with the death of Ms Alberto,” the embassy said in a statement on its official Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon.
To ensure that justice is served, embassy representatives assisted the daughter of Alberto in a case conference with the concerned UAE authorities, DFA said.
As of Wednesday, all of Alberto’s personal belongings have been officially handed over to her daughter who lives in Abu Dhabi.
“The department is extending all assistance necessary in the immediate resolution of the case, as well as in the repatriation of Ms. Alberto’s remains to the Philippines”, the statement added.

]]>The post Video: Opera singer performs to say 'thank you' to Abu Dhabi hospital staff who saved her life appeared first on The Wealth Land.
]]>An opera singer treated at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi returned to the hospital to perform for patients and staff on Wednesday, October 16, in a gesture of thanks to the people she credits with saving her life and in advance of World Stroke Day on October 29.
Louise Ryan suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, an uncommon form of stroke caused by a burst aneurysm in her brain in February 2018.
An aneurysm is a bulge in an artery caused by a weakening in the blood vessel wall. A burst aneurysm is fatal in around half of all cases and can lead to permanent disability such as paralysis or a loss of vision or speech, which could have ended her singing career.
“I was at the gym with my husband and I suddenly felt this terrible pain from the top of my neck going up all the way to the front of my head. I could tell this was something serious: I felt nauseous and had a weird sensation all over the left side of my body,” says Ryan, who most recently performed with Emirati composer Hamad Altee for his first solo show at Manarat Al Sadiyat.
Concerned, she sought treatment at a nearby hospital.
By the time she arrived, she was having trouble walking and seeing properly. After being evaluated, she was transferred to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the official stroke center for Abu Dhabi city.
Upon arrival, the hospital’s specialist stroke team stabilized her condition and performed an angiogram to determine the cause of her symptoms.
“Louise was certainly one of the lucky ones, since around 15 percent of people who suffer a burst aneurysm pass away before reaching a hospital[1]. Although her aneurysm had burst, she arrived at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi awake and alert with no neurological deficit.
After we stabilized her in our ICU, we were able to treat her using a minimally invasive, endovascular procedure before it could lead to further complications,” explains Dr. Khalil Zahra, a neurointerventional surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Neurological Institute.
Surgeons treated her aneurysm using a procedure called endovascular coiling. The minimally invasive procedure uses a catheter to reach the aneurysm through the patient’s arteries, removing the need to perform open surgery on the brain.
Once the catheter reaches the aneurysm, a platinum coil is released to encourage the blood to clot and the aneurysm to scar over.
Following her treatment, Louise was admitted for observation. She was in the hospital for three weeks to allow the care team to monitor her recovery and ensure that she was not suffering from any complications such as a re-bleed of the aneurysm or brain damage.
Less than three months after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage, she returned to her passion, performing as a mezzo soprano with the National Symphony Orchestra at a concert in Abu Dhabi. A passionate singer, Louise now teaches children’s singing classes across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
She sang in the gallery of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi for a lunchtime performance on Wednesday, October 16 at 12:30. Open to the public, the theme of her performance was love and gratitude in recognition of the life-saving care she received at the hospital.
“I felt I couldn’t do enough for the staff that did so much to care for me during my illness. Every single caregiver went above and beyond. Since my stroke, I have a much deeper appreciation of life and of everything I’m able to do. I saw the piano in the lobby, and I thought it would be a beautiful way to say thank you. If you’re caring for people, the best thing you can see is them fully recovered and going back to doing something they love,” concludes Ryan.
