Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is the world’s tallest manufactured structure, standing at 829.8 m (2,722 ft). Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004, with the exterior completed five years later in 2009. The primary structure is reinforced concrete and steel. At the time of its completion, Burj Khalifa was the tallest building and the tallest free-standing structure in the world.

The building has 162 stories, with a total height of 828 m (2,717 ft). It comprises residential and hotel space (floors 19–108), office floors (109–123), and observation decks (124–148), along with retail outlets and leisure facilities located on the lower levels. The decision to construct the building was made in September 2004 by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who wanted to increase tourism in the emirate.

The design for Burj Khalifa was inspired by the spiral minarets of Islamic architecture and is derived from a desert flower called the hemerocallis. The building’s Y-shaped floor plan maximizes views of the Persian Gulf. Burj Khalifa is billed as a “Vertical City” and houses residential apartments, corporate suites, hotels, observation decks, restaurants, and other amenities.

At 829.8 m (2,722 ft), Burj Khalifa surpassed the previous tallest structure in the world, Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan, by more than 160 m (525 ft). It also surpassed the height of the Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois (formerly Sears Tower) by more than 300 m (984 ft), and it is more than twice as tall as Malaysia’s Petronas Towers, which were the tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004.

The total height of Burj Khalifa is 828 m (2,717 ft), making it currently the tallest manufactured structure in the world. The building has a total of 160 stories, 147 stories above ground. The building stands on a concrete raft that is 6 meters thick and extends 95 meters below ground level. If you want to glimpse how incredibly tall the Burj Khalifa is, head to one observation decks on the 124th or 148th floor. You can see for yourself just how high this building reaches up in the sky.
